What to see
The headland is still covered with bomb craters and the ruins of German casemates. On D-Day, men of the 2nd Ranger Battalion scaled the cliffs with ropes and ladders to reach the guns. A granite Ranger Monument stands on a bunker at the cliff edge. A small visitor centre explains the assault.
Visiting
Pointe du Hoc is about 30 minutes from Bayeux and is usually combined with Omaha Beach and the American Cemetery. Stay on the marked paths; the cliff edges are eroding.
